Overview

Basic Function
This individual is capable of performing independent work in the therapeutic care, treatment and rehabilitation of clients within the program. This position plans and conducts therapeutic activities and counsels therapeutically with clients on an individual and group basis. He/she must demonstrate an advanced understanding of the full continuum of care. In addition, this person must have a broad understanding of how a drug and alcohol treatment program operates and how each client progresses in the treatment system.

Essential Function
1. Assesses treatment plans for clients with mental health history using the ASI (Addiction Severity Index) and the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders).
2. Determines the appropriate level of care according to ASAM (American Society of Addiction Medicine) Client Placement Criteria.
3. Obtains previous care records that are relevant to the current treatment episode.
4. Collaborates with clients to develop a recovery treatment plan.
5. Provides substance abuse and mental health counseling services specified in the client treatment plan.
6. Observes clients throughout treatment to determine the need for continued services, transfer, or discharge.
7. Develops discharge/transfer plan to ensure access to appropriate levels of care.
8. Contacts, consults and coordinates with referral sources as appropriate.
9. Participates with a multidisciplinary team for assigned clients.
10. Provides active case consultation.
11. Documents all counseling and education services, assessments, reassessments, referrals and follow- up in the client’s clinical record, and providing appropriate signatures and dating of such entries, including those made in electronic records.
12. Continues special training in areas designated by the Supervisor. May also comply with requirements of CADC/LCADC.
13. Ensures proper collection and documentation of urine samples.

14. Attends, participates, and when necessary, case consultations, facilitate special events, such as seminars, lectures, retreats, trips, workshops, etc.

15. Must provide good role modeling behavior for clients.
16. Facilitates Morning/Care & Concern Meetings with clients.
17. Ensures proper and appropriate documentation of all clinical sessions, lectures, seminars and interventions.
18. Responsible for full client case load and documentation of accountability procedures that require verification of interventions.
19. Attends all staff meetings and attend functions and/or meetings when the Administrator is not available.
20. Be responsible for alumni residents or others needing advanced care.
21. Moderates special groups such as extended groups, family meetings, workshops, or presentations.
22. Be responsible for orientation of new staff members when the Administrator is not available.
23. Perform other responsibilities and duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of the basic principles, philosophies, practices, and procedures involved at drug treatment facilities is required.
• Knowledge of the bio psycho social characteristics and manifestations of drug addiction is required.
• Knowledge of individual and group behavior and the effective ways of working with people to encourage on-going recovery is required.
• Must have the ability to work effectively with people, and aid them in identifying their specific needs.
• Must be able to develop a therapeutic relationship with clients while maintaining therapeutic boundaries.
• Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, other members of staff, outside agencies, institutions, and the general public.
• Must have the ability to successfully work with others from various cultures and backgrounds.
• Familiar with a residential facility environment, primary functions performed, and an understanding of a client’s levels of care.
• Must have previous experience with facilitating groups, seminars, meetings and/or specialized mental health therapeutic groups and activities.

Minimum Requirement

Education/Licensure: Master’s, Bachelor’s, or Associates Degree is preferred with a degree in Human Services, Social Work, Psychology, or similar field. High school diploma or GED is required. A CADC license is required. An LCADC, LSW, LAC, or LPC license is desirable.

Experience: At least two years working as a counselor, preferably in a drug treatment facility.

Sobriety: If recovering, must have at least two (2) years of continuous sobriety and maintain sobriety throughout employment.
