If you are one of the lucky ones in addiction careers that is getting notice by employers, juggling multiple job interviews may have become an issue. Here are some tips to keep you grounded and sane as you navigate your job search and set up these multiple interviews.

Post people in this market think that this isn’t going to happen. The truth of the matter is, though, that the substance abuse field is a pretty high demand field and there are a lot of open positions that need filling. So, if you are looking for one of these and start sending out resumes, you very well may get a flood of calls with employers directing you to a specific date and time to show up for your interview. Here is how you can handle this:
- Be as organized as possible. I make spreadsheets for everything, really everything. Have a master document that keeps you organized
with regards to each company that you’ve applied with and any contacts from them, including interview dates. - Be Honest. While there is no doubt that the prospective employer is looking at more potential candidates than just you, many employers make the unrealistic assumption that they are the only game in town. It’s ok to set them straight on this and to let them know that you have interviews scheduled with several other employers. You do not have to name them, and probably shouldn’t.
- Focus on one a time. If you have several job interviews scheduled, try not to have several on the same day and be sure to focus on just one job and company at a time. This will eliminate confusion and keep you focused. Prepare for the job requirements and research each company individually prior to the interview and then wait to prepare for the next one until after your present one is completed.
- One size does not fit all. Don’t get lazy by thinking that one interview style and set of answers is going to be sufficient for all of your interviews. Take the time to individually prepare for each company by researching their backgrounds and their culture so that you can adapt your answers and your style as you meet with them.
- Weigh your options. Sometimes an offer comes in when there is an interview set up with a company that we think we may be a better fit for. This can be a tricky and tough situation. The fact of the matter is that the only certainty is that you have a job offer. There is nothing else. One thing that you can do is ask for a little bit of time to think it over while you deal with the other company. It is ok to let another company know that you have an offer yet are interested in coming to work for them. Whether anything will come from that is another story.
Remember, when you are interviewing for multiple jobs in addiction careers, it can feel like you are juggling, but with proper planning and perspective, the process should be relatively smooth.
